More than the rankings

At Monash, we are proud to stand alongside the world’s leading universities on each of the most respected university rankings.

However, we know our reputation is earned through more than just polls – it’s about the company we keep, the impact of our research, the quality of our researchers, and our global network.

Our partners

We work with either the leading institution or a collaborative partner in a number of major research initiatives. We participate in seven Australian Research Centres of Excellence, and act as the lead institution on three.

We also partner in 15 Cooperative Research Centres focused on translating pure research findings for industry application.

Excellence in research

According to the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) report 2012, we are performing research "well above world standard" in the areas of:

  • engineering
  • chemical sciences
  • economics
  • law and legal studies
  • medical and health sciences
  • history and archaeology
  • philosophy and religious studies

We are performing at or above world standard in the areas of:

  • physical and biological sciences
  • information and computing sciences
  • education
  • commerce and management
  • tourism and services
  • creative arts and writing
  • language and culture
  • marketing
  • film, TV and digital media.

A global reputation

While we have agreements with 125 partner universities in 25 countries, we have worked hard to establish our own presence in the world. We operate campuses in Malaysia and South Africa, and a research and training centre in Prato, Italy.

We also operate the IITB-Monash Research Academy in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, and we are negotiating a joint venture for research and graduate studies in China.

The Group of Eight

The Group of Eight is an alliance of elite Australian universities recognised for their research excellence. The member universities produce more than 70 per cent of all basic research conducted at Australia’s 39 public universities.

It is a testament to our research focus and ambition that we are the youngest member of this prestigious group.

M8 Alliance

This alliance of academic health centres and medical universities is an international collaboration of academic institutions of research excellence. Our membership puts us in the room with the world's leaders in medical research, and lets us collaborate on some of the most important health projects around the globe.
