Follow our step-by-step guide on how to begin your research degree at Monash.

Monash University began life as a single campus in suburban Melbourne in 1958.

In little more than 50 years our ambition has driven us to expand to six Australian campuses, and to open campuses in Malaysia and South Africa, and a research and training centre in Prato, Italy. We also operate a collaborative research academy in India and are developing a joint research and graduate venture in China.

Each presence has its unique strengths and advantages.

You can use our global footprint to make your own mark on the world.

Globally mobile

We encourage research students to make the most of our global network by moving between our campuses during your time with us.

Each is representative of the communities that surround it, and each offers you its own resources and relationships.

A range of travel grants are available to help you reach the seminars, conferences, collaborators and facilities that could make a difference in your degree.

Every campus has character

The unique natures of each of our eight campuses let you draw on experiences and perspectives most universities cannot offer.

Berwick

Located in the heart of Melbourne’s urban growth corridor, Berwick is our newest Australian campus. The campus has a strong connection to the surrounding community, and is known for its strong links to industry. The research projects undertaken at the campus cover many different areas, including tourism, virtual communities, Australian history, viable democracies, volunteerism, regional development, community engagement and social inclusion.

The campus hosts the Tourism Research Unit (TRU) and the Animation and Visualisation Research Group (AVRG) and many other active research teams and individual researchers.

Clayton

The original Monash campus and still the largest, Clayton houses some of the finest researchers and research equipment in Australia. Several major research collaborations are on campus, including the ARC Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals and the ARC Centre for Green Chemistry. Clayton also hosts the world-renowned Monash Injury Research Institute, the largest wind tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere and specialised imaging and stem cell centres.

The campus is located adjacent to the CSIRO, the Australian Synchrotron and the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication.

Caulfield

Caulfield is the main centre for business and economics, art, design and architecture, and information technology. It hosts a number of key university programs including journalism, criminology, social work, psychology and the Monash MBA.

The renowned Monash University Museum of Art is also located at Caulfield.

Gippsland

Located in the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges, Gippsland offers a regional setting unmatched by an Australian university of our standing. The campus has dedicated scientific and medical laboratories and is home to our graduate medical degree. The campus has more than 200 higher degree by research students, and hosts several research groups, including the Gippsland Regional Automotive Centre, Bionics and Cognitive Sciences Centre and the Geotechnical and Hydrogeological Engineering Research Group.

Parkville

Home to the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Parkville campus has recently undergone a $50 million redevelopment. It is home to the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS), the largest and most experienced group of pharmaceutical scientists in Australia. MIPS is at the centre of several world-class pharmaceutical collaborations, with companies such as GSK and Servier Laboratories.

The campus also houses the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety, whose researchers collaborate on the evaluation and implementation of new, safer health care systems and medicines.

The Peninsula campus is located in the bayside suburb of Frankston and hosts postgraduate courses in business and economics, education and medicine, nursing and health sciences. More than 150 higher degree by research students study at the campus. Their research covers a wide variety of disciplines, but can be characterised by an emphasis on developing healthy, active communities.

Our presence in Italy gives our researchers direct access to Europe. The Prato Centre hosts workshops, seminars and conferences of international standing and operates intensive postgraduate courses. It is also a popular choice for cultural events and boasts a specialised library with a unique collection of medieval and renaissance titles.

Sunway campus, Malaysia

Sunway became our first international campus when Monash was invited to Malaysia by the government in the 1990s. Its hosts research degrees in arts, business, engineering, IT, medicine and science. The Malaysian location offers researchers unique access to the country’s unique economic and environmental resources, and a pathway into Southeast Asia.

The renowned Jeffery Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences conducts cardio-metabolic, infection and immunity, neuroscience and public health research.

South Africa

Monash South Africa is establishing itself as a research-intensive, public purpose institution that conducts research designed to meet the needs of contemporary Africa. It offers research degrees in sociology, psychology, criminal justice, communication and geography and environmental studies. The campus also hosts dedicated studies in integrated water management and is a key partner in the International Water Centre.
