Research Supervisor Accreditation Program

Our Research Supervisor Accreditation Program provides research degree supervisors with the knowledge and skills they need to supervise, guide and monitor students from writing a research proposal to submitting a thesis.

The publication, A Handbook for Doctoral Supervisors, cited the program as international best practice in 2005, and the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency’s predecessor commended it as national best practice in 2006.

The program was developed by Emeritus Professor Max King, the former Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Training).

It is delivered by highly experienced Monash research academics, including recipients of the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Supervision.
The Monash University Institute of Graduate Research supervisor accreditation begins at level one and rises to level three. The higher the level successfully completed, the higher the candidate load permitted for supervision.

We offer various training options, including fast-tracked, apprenticed or self-directed learning, to suit your needs.

Training for non-Monash staff

Partner institutions

The Monash University Institute of Graduate Research offers individually tailored supervisor training programs to Monash University’s valued partner institutions. These programs are traditionally run over two days.

Day one covers topics from the writing of a candidate's research proposal to the submission of the thesis.

Day two provides a unique opportunity for participants to receive mentoring from experienced Monash academic staff, who can identify your institution’s training needs and suggest how to apply your new supervision skills to your workplace.

Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (GCAP)

Monash University offers this graduate certificate to help academic staff develop teaching, research and leadership skills, relevant to contemporary higher education.

Those enrolled in GCAP are encouraged to complete level one of MIGR’s research supervisor training program, which partially fulfills the requirements for the GCAP elective unit, Higher Degree research supervision HED5070.

Training for Monash academic staff
