Faculty-specific requirements for confirmation of candidature

Monash Injury Research Institute

For the research master’s program a budget is required for the research project.

Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture

The Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture requires candidates enrolled in the Master of Fine Art to have successfully completed ADM5001 or Master of Design (by Research) to have successfully completed MDS5031, or met the requirements detailed in Section 3.8.1, other than when a candidate is transferring to a PhD:

Faculty of Arts

The research master’s programs in Arts have specific requirements in relation to the written submission (the timing of confirmation and the oral requirements are the same as the University-wide requirements – see Section 3.8.1). Candidates are required to submit a written report of 5000–6000 words, unless otherwise stated below. Some of these degrees require the submission of additional components:

Master of Arts (Creative Writing)

A detailed written document of 5000–6000 words focusing on two parts: the creative component and the exegetical

Master of Arts (Music Composition)

At least one fully drafted composition must be included in the portfolio. The literature review must be 2500 words

Master of Arts (Theatre Performance)

A proposal of 5000–6000 words focusing on two parts: the practice as research project and the critical commentary, including material currently in progress

Master of Arts by Research and Coursework

 
A literature review of 4500–5000 words

Master of Arts (Music Performance)

A minimum 10-minute live presentation of one of the pieces from the 60-minute recital must be submitted, along with a literature review of 2000 words

Master of Environmental Science by Research and Coursework

The literature review must be 4500–5000 words

Transfers to PhD

7000–10 000 word report plus a chapter of the thesis

 

Faculty of Business and Economics

The Faculty of Business and Economics has no specific requirements in relation to the oral and written submissions for confirmation of candidature (see the University-wide requirements in Section 3.8.1), other than the coursework completion requirements prior to confirmation:

Transfers to PhD

Candidates must satisfy the coursework requirements for the PhD, for their discipline, prior to transfer. Candidates must also submit a report of 3000–5000 words that provides a statement of the research problem and procedure for each research phase (if applicable)

 

Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education has no additional requirements for confirmation of candidature over and above the University-wide requirements detailed in Section 3.8.1, other than when a candidate is transferring to a PhD:

Report of 3000 words in the form of a progress report combined with a proposal for future research.

Transfers to PhD

A substantial report and research proposal of approximately 10,000 words with extended literature, theory and methodology sections

 

Faculty of Engineering

In addition to the University-wide requirements (see Section 3.8.1) the Faculty of Engineering has specific written requirements in relation to confirmation of candidature:

Faculty of Information Technology

The Faculty of Information Technology has no additional requirements for confirmation over and above the University-wide requirements detailed in Section 3.8.1, other than when a candidate is transferring to a PhD:

Progress report of 7000–10 000 words in the form of a progress report combined with a proposal for future research. Under exceptional circumstances, a shorter submission may be made (however no less than 2000 words), if accompanied by other evidence of significant progress, e.g. collected data, written code or publications

 

Faculty of Law

In addition to the University-wide requirements (see Section 3.8.1) the Faculty of Law has specific oral and written requirements in relation to confirmation of candidature:

An example of the candidate’s written work of up to 7000 words, to be negotiated with the supervisor

Master of Laws (Research)

A progress report of at least 1000 words plus an example of the candidate’s written work of up to 5000 words, which can be negotiated with the supervisor

Transfers to PhD

A progress report of at least 1000 words, plus two solid draft chapters of minimum combined word length of at least 10 000, negotiated with the supervisor

 

Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences requires all research master’s candidates to submit a progress report of a minimum of 3000 words.

Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has no specific requirements, however all candidates are required to meet with the Associate Dean Research Training once confirmation of candidature is complete.

Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science requires all research master’s candidates to submit a brief literature review and research project plan in the first 3–6 months of candidature.
