It is strongly recommended that a new candidate, in consultation with his/her supervisor, develops a project that can be completed within the duration of the particular degree on either a full-time or part-time basis.
The minimum period of candidature is one year full-time or two years part-time. The maximum period of candidature for research-only degrees is two years full-time (with the exception of the Master of Surgery which is 1.5 years full-time), or four years part-time. The maximum period of candidature for research degrees including a coursework component is 1.5 years full-time or three years part-time. See section 13 of the Master Degree by Research Regulations.
In exceptional circumstances where candidature has been delayed by factors outside the control of the candidate, an extension of candidature of three months full-time or six months part-time may be granted. Any extension beyond this period will be considered on a case-by-case basis and only in exceptional circumstances.
