9.2 Graduate scholarships

Graduate research scholarships are available for full-time research at graduate level for study at one of Monash University's Australian campuses. Over 300 living allowance or stipend scholarships are offered at the main central selection round, which closes on 31 October each year. Approximately 70 international scholarship awardees are also offered scholarships to meet their tuition costs. 

A mid-year scholarship round is held each year which closes on 31 May. Approximately 70 living allowance or stipend scholarships and 15 tuition-paying scholarships are offered. In addition, some faculties offer scholarships to a number of applicants who miss out on a central scholarship offer.

Monash South Africa offers Postgraduate Tuition Fee Scholarships for full-time and part-time research studies.  For relevant information research candidates should contact the research coordinator.

9.2.1 Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)

This award, offered by the Australian Government for candidates who are proposing to undertake a doctoral or research master’s course, is available to Australian citizens and permanent residents, New Zealand citizens and international students who have been awarded an Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS). Applicants must hold an Australian or New Zealand bachelor’s degree with first class honours (H1) or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University. The APA provides a yearly non-taxable stipend to full-time candidates. Relocation and thesis allowances may also be payable.

9.2.2 Linkage Project Scholarships (LPS) formerly Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) [APA(I)]

This award, which aims to prepare high calibre researchers for industry research, is available to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and international students who are proposing to undertake a doctoral or research master’s degree. 

Applicants must hold an Australian or New Zealand bachelor’s degree with a minimum of second class honours (H2A) or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University. Potential candidates are invited to submit applications to academic staff members who have been awarded a collaborative grant with a company through this scheme. These awards provide a yearly non-taxable stipend to full-time candidates. 

Where international students are nominated for a Linkage Project Scholarship (LPS) the international student fees and the costs of overseas student health cover (OSHC) must be met by the nominated candidate or their academic unit or faculty.

Candidates selected for an LPS must also apply for candidature using the on-line application system. Applicants for doctoral or research master’s (including MPhil) candidature should select 'research degree' only.

LPS will provide a stipend only. There is no provision for:

  • relocation or thesis allowance;
  • paid sick or maternity Leave (but such leave can be taken as intermission/leave without pay);
  • extension of scholarship, unless funding is approved by the Australian Research Council (ARC) in the original grant application.

The duration of scholarship is to be determined by the Chief Investigator of the project in line with approved funding. Please refer to the ARC Linkage Funding Rules and Funding Agreements. Chief Investigators and Academic Units will be required to complete the MDS/MRS Nomination form, indicating the relevant Linkage Project Number to identify the LPS.

9.2.3 Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS)

This award, offered by Monash University, is available to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and international students who are proposing to undertake a doctoral or research master’s course. Applicants must hold an Australian or New Zealand bachelor’s degree with first class honours (H1) or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University. Monash Graduate Scholarships provide a yearly non-taxable stipend to full-time candidates. Allowances for relocation and thesis costs may also be payable.

Where international students are nominated for an MGS the international student fees and the costs of overseas student health cover (OSHC), if not met by the award of a separate tuition scholarship, must be met by the nominated candidate, or their academic unit or faculty.

9.2.4 Monash Silver Jubilee Scholarship (MSJS)

This special scholarship is offered each year to groups of faculties in turn. Monash Graduate Scholarship eligibility criteria apply.

Where international students are nominated for an MSJS the international student fees and the costs of overseas student health cover (OSHC), if not met by the award of a separate tuition scholarship, must be met by the nominated candidate or their academic unit or faculty.

9.2.5 Sir James McNeill Foundation Postgraduate Award (JMcN)

This prestigious scholarship is available to a candidate proposing to undertake a doctorate in the disciplines of music, engineering, science or medicine. Applicants must hold an Australian or New Zealand bachelor’s degree with first class honours (H1) or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University. Monash Graduate Scholarship eligibility criteria apply.

Where international students are nominated for the JMcN scholarship the international student fees and the costs of overseas student health cover (OSHC), if not met by the award of a separate tuition scholarship, must be met by the nominated candidate or their academic unit or faculty.

 

9.2.6 Monash Equity Scholarship (MES)

This stipend scholarship, offered by Monash University, is available to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents who are proposing to undertake a doctoral or research master’s course. Applicants must hold an Australian or New Zealand bachelor’s degree with first class honours (H1) or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University. Applicants with a disability or whose academic career has been adversely affected are eligible to apply for this award.

9.2.7 Monash Indigenous Research Award (MIRA)

This scholarship, offered by Monash University, is available to Indigenous Australians who are proposing to commence a doctoral or research master’s course. The awards aim to attract Indigenous candidates who are eligible to enter directly into a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or research master’s degree. The scholarship is also available to high-achieving candidates who may apply for a conjoint Honours/Research Degree program. The conjoint Honours/Research Degree program includes completion of an honours year prior to commencing the research degree program (PhD or research master’s).

9.2.8 International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)

This award, offered by the Australian Government, meets the cost of course fees for the candidate and compulsory health cover for the candidates and any dependants who accompany them. It does not provide an allowance for living expenses. Only international candidates whose research interests align with the University’s research activities and who will be commencing research master’s or doctoral programs may apply for the awards. Applicants must hold the equivalent of an Australian bachelor’s degree with first class honours (H1) or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University. Persons from all overseas countries, except New Zealand, are eligible to apply. (New Zealand citizens are exempt from paying international student fees.)

9.2.9 Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS)

This scholarship, offered by Monash University, meets the cost of course and amenities fees for the candidate plus compulsory health cover for the candidate and any dependants who accompany them. It does not provide an allowance for living expenses. Both prospective candidates and those part-way through their research program may apply. Applicants must hold the equivalent of an Australian bachelor’s degree with first class honours (H1) or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University. Candidates from all overseas countries, except New Zealand, are eligible to apply. (New Zealand citizens are exempt from paying international student fees.)

9.2.10 Vera Moore International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (VMIPRS)

The most prestigious of the University’s tuition awards, the Vera Moore International Postgraduate Research Scholarship, is part of an award package that covers course fees for the candidate and overseas student health cover for the candidate and any accompanying dependants. A research allowance may also be payable. Both prospective candidates and those part-way through their research program may apply. Applicants must hold the equivalent of an Australian bachelor’s degree with first class honours (H1) or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University.

This award is only made when sufficient funds are available.

9.2.11 Australian Development Scholarships (ADS)

These scholarships are available to applicants from specified developing countries. AusAID will advertise for candidates for the ADS scheme. Scholarships may be offered for both research and coursework graduate programs. Awards meet course fees and provide a living allowance. Closing dates for the ADS program vary. Information on application procedures for the awards may be obtained from the Australian Diplomatic Mission in the country of citizenship.

9.2.12 Monash Departmental Scholarships (MDS)

Many academic units at Monash University offer graduate scholarships funded from internal sources or outside funds to be used at the department’s discretion. Nominations for Monash Departmental Scholarships are submitted directly to the Monash University Institute of Graduate Research (MIGR) Office by the head of academic unit.

9.2.13 Monash Research Scholarships (MRS)

Many academic units at Monash University offer externally funded graduate scholarships where the sponsor indicates that the funding is to be used for a specific project under specified conditions. Nominations for Monash Research Scholarships are submitted directly to the MIGR Office by the head of academic unit.
