It is strongly recommended that a new candidate, in consultation with his/her supervisors, develops a project that can be completed within three years of full-time or six years of part-time candidature.
The minimum period of candidature is two years of full-time or four years of part-time candidature. In exceptional circumstances, the Graduate Research Committee, on the recommendation of the relevant academic unit, may agree to reduce the period by up to one year of full-time or two years of part-time candidature. Such a request will only be considered where there is evidence of exceptional progress and/or additional research experience that is extensive and of high calibre. See Section 12A.1.1 of the Doctorate Regulations.
In the case of a candidate considering transferring to Monash University from another institution there is an expectation that such a candidate will undertake a minimum of 12 months’ full-time equivalent research while enrolled as a University candidate. Otherwise, except in very exceptional circumstances as deemed by the Graduate Research Committee, it is expected that a candidate remains enrolled at his/her original institution of candidature and submit his/her thesis through that institution.
The maximum period of candidature is four years of full-time or eight years of part-time candidature. In exceptional circumstances where candidature has been delayed by factors outside the control of the candidate, an extension of six months full-time may be granted. Where candidates seek an extension on a part-time basis they will be granted six months in the first instance. Where a further extension is sought a further six months may be granted dependent on the candidate demonstrating progress in the first six months. After this period candidature will be deemed to have lapsed by expiry of time; however, the candidate may be reinstated by the Graduate Research Committee at any time within the next three years for examination purposes only. See section 12A.1.1 of the Doctorate Regulations.
See Section 5.4.2 of the PhD Regulations; and Doctor of Medicine Regulation 5.1.2.
There is no minimum or maximum period of candidature for staff PhD and MD (unsupervised) candidates. See PhD Regulation 5.4.2 and Doctor of Medicine Regulation 5.1.2.
