A copy of the thesis is dispatched to each examiner only when all documentation related to the submission of the thesis has been completed. Thesis copies are dispatched by express post to examiners in Australia and by courier to examiners overseas.
Candidates are issued with an email at the same time as the thesis is sent to examiners. It provides the names of the examiners and outlines the examination process. Candidates are reminded that it may take between four and six months before an examination result is finalised.
On officially being invited to examine a thesis, examiners are given eight weeks to complete their reports. Examiners are requested to contact the MIGR Office should an extension be required and candidates are notified of any extensions granted.
If a report is not received within one week of the deadline, a reminder is sent by email. Reminders are sent fortnightly until the examiner’s report is received. In the case of unacceptable delays, the head of the academic unit, in consultation with the main supervisor, may be asked to find a replacement examiner.
If the examiners are not unanimous in recommending a thesis pass, then the examination process may be prolonged.
Candidates and supervisors must not contact examiners during the examination process in matters pertaining to the thesis examination. Any correspondence must be through the MIGR Office.
