Section 12A of the Doctorate Regulations (Monash only) contains relevant provisions for duration of candidature.
An extension of candidature will normally only be considered where research has been delayed by circumstances beyond the candidate's control, for example equipment breakdown; change in research direction; change in supervision; or illness of candidate. Employment commitments are not considered outside the control of the candidate and cannot be used as a reason for extending candidature. A request for extension should be accompanied by a detailed statement of delays to the research project and timetable for completion. International fee-paying candidates should note that an extension to candidature will result in additional course fees, for which they are liable.
Applications for extension, supported by the candidate's main supervisor and head of the academic unit or graduate coordinator, should be submitted on the appropriate Extension of Candidature Form (Monash only). Applications must be submitted to the MIGR Office for approval.
Doctoral candidates are eligible to apply for a maximum of six months' (full-time equivalent) extension to candidature. Extensions beyond six months (full-time equivalent) will only be granted in exceptional circumstances.
Candidates may apply to undertake an extension of candidature on a part-time basis. In such cases an extension will initially be granted for six months. At the end of this initial extension, part-time candidates will be eligible to apply for a further extension to candidature of six months. A second extension of candidature will only be approved where the application is supported by evidence of effective progress throughout the initial extension period.
