You need good English language skills for admission to a research degree at Monash. The minimum requirements, which can vary slightly between faculties, are set out in detail the Handbook for Doctoral Degrees and the Handbook for Research Master's Degrees.
You need to submit full documentary evidence in support of your English skills with your application.
If your first language is not English, or you didn’t study in English for your degree qualifications, we reserve the right to seek further documentary evidence of your English ability.
If you plan to meet the English proficiency requirements by completing an IELTS or TOEFL test, you can check the individual faculty requirements.
If you apply for a scholarship while waiting for TOEFL or IELTS results, keep in mind your results need to be available by the end of November if applying in the end-of-year scholarship application round, or by the end of June if applying in the mid-year round. Plan to have evidence of your English proficiency ready when you submit your scholarship application.
If you can’t quite meet our English language requirements, we offer a number of courses and pathways, including through Monash College, to help you.
