Bach     Goldberg Variations
Caroline Almonte , piano
One of the most famous pieces in the piano repertoire is The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988. Bach wrote this monumental work for the keyboard instrument of the era, the harpsichord and it consists of a set of 30 Variations on a Sarabande. First published in 1741, the work is considered to be one of the most important examples of variation form and Bach's last series of Keyboard music. The Variations are named after Johann Gottlieb Goldberg , who may have been the first performer.
The title page, translated from German reads -"Aria mit verschiedenen Veranderungen" - "Aria with diverse alterations : Keyboard exercise, consisting of an ARIA with diverse variations for harpsichord with two manuals. Composed for connoisseurs, for the refreshment of their spirits, by Johann Sebastian Bach, composer for the royal court of Poland and the Electoral court of Saxony, Kapellmeister and Director of Choral Music in Leipzig."
Bach's Goldberg Variations have been described as music of "deep humanism, optimism and intellectual complexity."
