What does structure in academic writing involve?

Organisation in academic writing involves putting yourself in the reader's position and thinking about what is the best order and presentation for your work to make sense to them. Once you have thought about this, you need to signal to your reader throughout your piece – not just what you are saying – but what you are doing. This enables them to see where you are going, follow your direction, and therefore be more sympathetic to your writing.

To keep your reader on your side, you also need to follow carefully the specific format and particular application of academic conventions for your subject which you will find set out in your unit guide.
