How can you make use of the following to increase your understanding of a text?

  • Reviews of the text
  • Fellow students' comments
  • Tutor / lecturer comments.

Reviews of the text

Reading reviews and comments on a text will help you identify:

  • the main points of a text
  • links between this text and other texts and arguments
  • the strengths and weaknesses of the text

Re-reading specific parts will help you develop and deepen your understanding of issues important for your purposes.

Fellow students' comments

You may wish to start a study group. Discussion with other students will:

  • help you develop a fuller picture of the text, as you all help to fill in bits not understood
  • deepen your understanding of issues
  • help you to explore links between issues in the text and other issues in other texts; this will lead to the formulation of important questions to which you need to find answers

In addition, such discussions can be carried out in enjoyable environments!

Tutor comments

Tutors' comments will in some ways be like a review of the text. But they also provide a perspective on the text in the context of your course of study.

  • How important is the text, and why?
  • How does it fit in with the course of study?
  • Does the tutor agree/disagree with the text, and why/why not?
