Reading strategies in Education

How do you develop successful reading strategies?

  • Identify specific information you need to know.
  • Learn how to save time by reading relevant information.
  • Develop research skills.
  • Develop good study habits.

In the Education faculty, the work load is heavy. Requirements for each unit involve at least two assignments to show the practical application of educational theories. Each unit has an extensive reading list that students are expected to read to develop their knowledge and teaching philosophies. Unit guides list required reading materials. From these you must identify specific information. Lecturers expect you to keep up with the set readings and to select others to expand your knowledge. Planning your reading is an effective coping strategy. Establish what you need to know rather than reading at random without a clear focus.

Often students have other commitments. Parents must plan their time carefully and juggle time between study and family responsibilities. People who have part time work must also maintain balance between work commitments and course requirements. Developing efficient reading strategies helps you identify quickly what is important, relevant and meaningful.

This section looks at reading books and journals.

For more help, Learning Support staff run classes and workshops and the Faculty of Education organises course related programs to assist you. Take advantage of these as they save time and effort.
