A useful guideline is that when a title includes a countable noun which indicates the type of entity, the is usually needed.
Examples

the International Monetary Fund the International Olympic Committee the Australian Broadcasting Corporation the United States of America the United Nations Organisation |
However, when the abbreviation is an acronym (a group of initials that can be pronounced like a word), the is not used unless it is written out in full.
