Address expectations and seek solutions

  • Find out the competency criteria and requirements for your practicum placement.
  • Find out about your rights and responsibilities and any legal and professional issues, rights and responsibilities.
  • Find solutions for anything you anticipate to be problematic. For example, if you have dyslexia and you're on teaching rounds, you may need to find ways to address this, if the condition affects you literacy or numeracy.
  • Visit the organisation you'll be attending and get a feel for the place, the expectations, resources, work requirements and so on.
  • If you have a condition that affects your performance, then you may want to discuss your rights and responsibilities and disclosure issues with someone.
  • You may also find it useful to have a mentor or someone you can debrief with about any difficult situations or incidents if they occur on your rounds.

It's important that you have considered issues of disclosure (both for and against), and find an appropriate solution with which you're comfortable. Talk to your course co-ordinators and placement co-ordinators if you have any concerns. You can also revisit your decision at any stage.

Can you think of other situations where certain issues may require some creative solutions?
