Six thinking hats

The Edward De Bono idea of six thinking hatsOpens in a new window helps you to look at a decision or topic from all perspectives. This is great for group work and extending your 'comfort zone'.

You can 'try on' six hats to generate different lines of inquiry or angles of approach. The technique of wearing an imaginary hat can help to shift your thinking.

The six thinking hats

White hat thinking = focusing on facts, figures, information required

Red hat thinking = using feelings, emotions, intuitions

Black hat thinking = logical thinking involving judgement and caution

Yellow hat thinking = thinking optimistically, positive thinking

Green hat thinking = thinking creatively, generating novel ideas

Blue hat thinking = cool and calm thinking, controlling processes and steps

These hat things are great fun, we sometimes use them in our group work and swap them around, but look I use them solo just to generate multiple views. It's a useful technique for me. Try it out and see if it works for you!

What if?

Take any topic you like, or choose from the list below and 'try on' a different hat to generate ideas. Did you come up with any surprising points?

  1. What if every university student had an academic blog?
  2. How would compulsory human microchip implants for national identity benefit society?
  3. What if all university assignments moved beyond conventional written essays and reports to be in digital, multi-modal and other creative formats?
  4. What if all libraries of the future were digital or electronic? We should have no more books sitting on shelves gathering dust.
