Garment of affirmation

Design your garment of affirmation

Do you feel particularly good wearing a particular hat or coat or belt? Do you have a favourite t-shirt or cloak or scarf? Imagine an invisible garment which surrounds you with positive energy whenever you need confidence.

Find a quiet safe place, where you won't be interrupted.

Sit in a relaxed position. Relax your breathing. Relax your shoulders. Relax your muscles.

Now take yourself to a beautiful, peaceful, calm place – it's your favourite place. Visualise it; see the colours; listen to the sounds. See yourself walking or sitting in this beautiful location.

Smell the scents. Now as you breathe in, breathe in calming and beautiful energy. And as you breathe out, imagine all the negativity and anxiety being released through your breath.

And as you become more relaxed, weave this positive energy into a magical invisible garment for yourself. Imagine what it looks like, imagine the textures – perhaps it's silk, or velvet or linen. Feel its texture; imagine the colour; create any pockets you want. Does it need buttons? Imagine them; feel them. Imagine any other special touches on the garment. Start to weave these extra details into your garment to enrich it.

And now you can start to see it reaching completion. You start to see yourself with the completed garment – feeling very comfortable in it. Feel the textures, feel the lightness, feel the energy and the security it gives you.

Now start to imagine that you're wearing this garment and feel the sensation of positive energy surrounding you. Feel the confidence it gives you… Only you can see this magical garment. You can access it any time you need it.

Now in a little while it will be time to fold and wrap away your garment and bring yourself back to the place you're in. But imagine that whenever you need to feel confident, you can call upon this garment, unwrap it and wear it to help you feel relaxed and confident and energized.

Make a note or drawing and pin it up over your desk. Describe your garment…

  • What is it? What is it made of? What colour is it?
  • What special features does it have?
  • How did it make you feel and why?

I found that sometimes because it took me so much longer to get through course material, I used to get a bit down and it took me longer to do assignments because of the adaptive technology. But I used to take breaks and stay positive about all my abilities – rather than focus on 'disabilities', I'd focus on my abilities! I get balance in my life by going to the BBC 'Ouch' web site Opens in a new window. It gave me a good dose of inspiration and laughter!

I found it took me ages to read materials and I had to get some of it in audio format, so I would often be behind and it would wear me down. I eventually accepted that I needed more time to catch up and so gave up working one evening a week so I could fit in the catch-up time. It made quite a difference to my feeling of being able to juggle everything. My advice to anyone is we're all different and never compare yourself to someone else's pace! But be realistic about what you take on. It's better to do fewer things well than trying to do everything and not managing to do anything!!
