Assistive technology support at Monash

Adaptive Technology Rooms

Students registered with the Disability Liaison Unit (DLU) can be provided with access to the library Adaptive Technology Rooms (ATRs).

ATRs are located on the Caulfield, Berwick, Gippsland and Peninsula campus. There are three on the Clayton campus in the Law Library, Matheson and Hargrave-Andrew.

Within each room are a computer and scanner. Software includes:

  • JAWS for screen reading
  • Magic for screen magnification
  • Read & Write Gold for page reading and text literacy assistance
  • Finereader for scanning and fast optical character recognition
  • Dragon Naturally Speaking for dictation and voice control of PC
  • Inspiration for graphical idea representation and essay structuring.

Equipment

The library also has the following equipment:

  • Braille embosser and Duxbury translator at Matheson Library
  • Four track tape recorders at Matheson Library
  • Kurzweil book readers at Law and Matheson libraries
  • T T Y telephone typewriters at Caulfield, Matheson and Peninsula libraries
  • Close Circuit Televisions (CCTV) for magnification

The Disability Liaison Unit (DLU) has limited equipment which can be borrowed:

  • laptops with assistive software which can be used on loan for class tests and exams
  • a dictaphone.
