Roles and responsibilities

What are my roles and responsibilities as a staff member at Monash?

You have a role in assisting students with disabilities to both participate in the academic and social life of the university and to use university facilities and services on the same basis as a student without a disability.

Responsibilities

  • consulting with a student about their expectations for the course and determining adjustments that need to be made
  • ensuring that the learning needs of the course are flexible enough for the student to be able to participate
  • providing alternative tasks/activities where a student is unable to participate: these activities must be consistent with the objectives of the course
  • assisting students in accessing specialist help
  • ensuring assessment tasks allow a student to demonstrate learning in the areas being assessed
  • employing teaching strategies that do not disadvantage any student
  • providing course materials in a format that is appropriate for the student
  • ensuring that a student with a disability is not discriminated against in any way
  • ensuring that any specialised equipment or material is available.
