Glossary of termsSome common terms that describe specific types of learning disabilities are: Dyslexia: impairment in the ability to read or use language. For example, difficulties with learning and remembering letters, written or spoken words, sound/symbol associations, reversal of letters and words, omitting and adding letter to words, mishearing or misinterpreting words. Dyscalculia: impairment in the ability to perform mathematics. For example, difficulty in recognising numbers, understanding basic mathematical concepts, and performing mathematical calculations. Dysgraphia: impairment in written language. For example, poor handwriting, spelling, sentence structure, vocabulary usage and organisation of information in a written format. Dysphasia: impairment in the ability to use or understand language. Difficulty attaching meaning to language. Dysnomia: a marked difficulty remembering names or recalling words needed for oral or written language.
