How does it affect students' learning

What is the impact of a learning disability on student learning?

Within a traditional learning environment, learning disabilities may affect a person's learning to a mild, moderate or severe degree. They can interfere with the acquisition and use of one or more of the following skills:

  • oral language (listening, speaking, understanding)
  • reading (decoding, comprehension)
  • written language (spelling, written expression)
  • mathematics (computation, problem solving)
  • organisational, (poor short term memory)
  • automaticity (difficulty listening and taking notes at the same time)
  • social perception and social interaction (inability to make and keep friends).

However provision of effective accommodations and strategies will allow such students equal access to academic courses and activities to develop their strengths. With these supports in place, such students can not only complete their courses, they can excel in them.
