Strategies

Providing a safe environment.
What are some of the approaches used by staff at Monash to implement inclusive teaching strategies? The following are some of their suggestions:
Be flexible
- Recognise that students have a range of different learning styles and dealing with different pressures and constraints. Deadlines may need to be negotiated. Extra reading time may be needed for assignments in order not to disadvantage students because of their disability.
- Use a variety of teaching methods and presentation styles to accommodate different learning styles.
- Be prepared to reassess the materials used and adjust the way they are delivered and assessed if needed.
- Negotiate directly with students, whenever possible, regarding their requirements.
- Consult with others such as CALT Learning Support staff, disability liaison officers, and counsellors who can support and advise both students and staff.
Design the learning environment

Advice to staff.
- Make learning environments safe and accessible so students with particular requirements feel confident to talk about them.
- Alert students to what is expected during a lecture and tutorial; orient them to the laboratory/ workshop and equipment to minimise anxiety and confusion.
- Prepare course materials, lecture notes, handouts etc, in electronic format as much as possible (to enable students to use screen readers etc.) and ensure this is organised as early as possible.
- Provide students with chapter outlines, task analyses or study guides that cue them to key points in their reading.
- Provide early access to materials and content, such as class notes, outlines and objectives of lectures, and handouts ahead of time. Permit lectures to be taped (where possible.) Give students required book lists early, and give them extra time to read materials.
