Inclusive practices - What is Monash doing?

"To find out more..."
Monash has a commitment to supporting its increasingly diverse students (and staff). This is achieved through the implementation of its Global Equal Opportunity Policy and the Inclusive Practices Disability Plan 2004-2008 which express its core values for high quality teaching and learning.
Inclusive Practices Project
The Inclusive Practices Project is one of the strategies to address the range of issues which arise from the Monash Inclusive Practices Disability Plan and the Education Plan.
The key premise of the Project is to focus attention on how the teaching and learning environment can be 'enabling' for students rather than labeling them as being the problem, in need of remediation. All students can benefit from teachers being aware of the diversity in their classrooms and adapting instruction accordingly.
The emphasis is on staff training and development and the promotion of inclusive practices throughout the university.
Components of the project
The project which commenced in May 2005, has 3 components:
- offering training sessions for faculty and support staff on diversity issues in teaching and learning and strategies to implement inclusive curricula through workshops and online resources (such as this website) as well as promoting inclusive practices at committees and staff meetings.
- providing support for faculties through a collaborative support system and close liaison between two units (Disability Liaison Unit and the Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching).
- offering one-to-one and online support for diverse learners with 'hidden disabilities', that is students with learning disabilities or mental health conditions.
The project aims through collaboration between faculties and support services to offer a network of support for both students and staff with the inclusive view that diverse learners add value to any classroom and institution.
