Alternative Arrangements for Assessments

What are alternative arrangements for assessment? (AAA's)

The purpose of alternative arrangements is to provide students with a disability or long-term medical condition with an equitable opportunity to demonstrate their potential in examinations.

Monash is committed to enabling inclusive assessment procedures by providing alternative arrangements for assessment (Inclusive Practices: Disability Plan 2004 - 2008 p 20 opens in a new window)

The Monash University Alternative Arrangements for Assessments (AAAs) include provision of reasonable accommodation for students registered with the Disability Liaison Unit (DLU) undertaking examinations or faculty based tests.

The university must provide AAAs for students whose applications have been assessed and supported by the DLU.

These provisions assist students to reach their full potential by minimising the impact of their disability in the assessment process.

The provision of AAAs does not undermine academic integrity

Should an alternative be offered, the assessment criteria will need to be revisited to ensure equity. The alternative will still need to meet the same learning outcomes as the original assessment form.

Typical accommodations for exams include:

  • use of a scribe in exams to write down answers and to read out questions for students who have difficulty reading the questions and writing answers.
  • rest breaks
  • separate venue/space which is quiet and soundproof,
  • use of assistive technology or ergonomic furniture
  • papers or responses in alternative formats
  • sitting exams at different times or on different days.

However, not all the above AAAs are available to all students. The DLU can assist lecturing staff with the specific accommodations required by students registered with them.
