Inclusive practices - why have them?

Students with disabilities have the same rights and responsibilities as other students. It is not the disability itself, but the effect the disability has on the student's ability to access, learn and demonstrate knowledge and skills which is relevant. More and more disabled people are entering higher education. Disabled students are increasingly aware of their rights and less prepared to accept inadequate provision.

Legislation

The university is required, by federal legislation (Disability Discrimination Act Launch new window

and the Disability Standards for Education Launch new window

) to ensure that appropriate adjustments to the learning environment are made to enable the student to participate in education on the same basis as a student without a disability. This applies not only to physical access barriers and the provision of support services, but also to teaching and learning strategies, assessment methods and administrative policies.
