ABC Radio

The national radio station, the ABC or Australian Broadcasting Commission, has a web site where you can hear radio programs and download transcripts from the programs. Transcripts are the words or text from the program. Transcripts will provide you with a printed text version of everything in the program so you can see and read the words as well as hear them.

• Radio National  presents programs in a range of topic areas such as health, education, the environment, science, law and religion.You can listen to a program via audio streaming on the internet and download transcripts. Below are some of the many interesting programs to choose from.
• The Business Report  should be of interest to Business and Economics students.
• Late Night Live  hosted by Phillip Adams, is an informative and lively current affairs program.
• Background Briefing  is an international documentary program.
• The Health Report should be of interest to students from Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences
• The Science Show  hosted by Robyn Williams, is of interest to Science students as well as a general audience.

To tune into the correct frequency, go to the ABC's Tune In page. If you cannot tune in on your radio, try listening to the programs on the internet . A complete list of all transcripts  for ABC radio programs is available.

Radio Australia broadcasts in English to many Asia and Pacific countries. Check the English Radio Program Schedule .  Asia Pacific program transcripts are available through Radio Australia.

Radio Australia also has global partnerships with many Asian Pacific countries, broadcasting in the local language and in English. Radio Rediffusion Malaysia and Radio 3  in Hong Kong are both English language radio stations.

ABC Television

ABC TV  has transcripts for some of its TV programs.

A program recommended for your English language is Behind the News which screens every week during school terms on ABC Channel 2. This program has transcripts of the entire broadcast as well as related language activities. The program is about issues and events in the news. If you cannot view the program at the time it is broadcast, and you have a video cassette recorder (VCR), you could set the timer on the VCR to record it for you. If you have a copy of the program and the transcripts, you can then make your own English language listening kit.

Another highly recommended TV program is Australian Story , a weekly documentary series featuring interesting or famous Australians telling their own stories. The transcripts  are available for this program.

Commercial television channels

Television  is very helpful for your listening and speaking skills as you will hear Australian accents and the common language spoken by Australians. Some enjoyable local Australian programs include The Secret Life of Us, Home and Away and Neighbours. Note that when Neighbours is screened in countries other than Australia it is likely to be dubbed in the local language.
