How can I improve my use of punctuation?

Improve your capabilities in this area by developing your own continuous improvement cycle. This means pay attention to those areas that concern you; make an attempt to include this information in your writing; check for the effect – did you get it right?; try an alternative approach, if necessary; make another attempt; and so on.

These resources will be useful in helping you to improve your use of punctuation.

  • Check Language and Learning Online for tutorials on punctuation
  • There is a range of good websites and web resources you can refer to, such as Purdue's Online Writing Lab opens in a new window and Punctuation Made Simple opens in a new window at Illinois State University. Simply conduct a Google search on appropriate terms for other sites. Ensure you limit the range to edu extensions.
  • Join iDEas, a free email list designed to enhance off-campus learners' understanding of academic conventions. List members receive regular contributions on academic matters such as how to use commas correctly, using apostrophes and so on.
  • Conduct a catalogue search in the Library for resources to teach you how to use punctuation correctly.
  • Request a handout via email.

Can you suggest any resources you have found particularly useful in this area? Share your reflections and examples in an email to iDEas@calt.monash.edu.au.
