How do I conduct research? It depends on the task and task requirements! Re-search effortsOne lecturer describes research as 're-searching' - meaning going over what others have already discovered in the relevant literature and resources in your field. In tertiary study, you are expected to use other people's work (their ideas and information) to support, develop and clarify your own. In some undergraduate subjects, you will undertake actual research involving, for example, surveys, psychological testing, and so on. You would also be expected to undertake research in postgraduate research degrees but at a much more complex level involving ethics approval and so on. In most coursework assessment, however, research means collecting literature relevant to your topic, reading it, reflecting on it, and developing a line of argument you can support (or write about!) Of course, students undertaking higher degree research will also need to be familiar with this. Library resourcesResearching means you will need to become familiar with the resources of the Library. There are specific services Language and Learning Online has a great range of resources to provide guidance for how you work through the research process for assignment preparation.
