Diagnostic questionnaire

One way to contextualize students' reading may be to give them, with the reading list, a short self-test on what you regard as crucial pre-requisite knowledge for your course. This is one of the things that a Learning Management System like MUSO Opens in a new window is designed to facilitate.

A small number of diagnostic questions – yes-no/true-false/multiple choice – could be designed such that students' responses would trigger feedback providing them with or directing them to preliminary readings which may or may not be in the subject reading list.

A further refinement would be to ask your friendly educational designer to set up a feedback system for you to let you know within the first week or so of the semester how many times the test has been accessed, and what the modal responses have been to the questions you have asked. This could be useful in alerting you to particular areas of background knowledge that need to be reinforced before or as new material is introduced.

If the test is accessed under individual login, it should be possible to identify:
  • how many students have accessed the test
  • which students have accessed it, and how often
  • the response pattern of any particular student.
