Diagnostic questionnaireOne way to contextualize students' reading may be to give them, with the reading list, a short self-test on what you regard as crucial pre-requisite knowledge for your course. This is one of the things that a Learning Management System like MUSO A small number of diagnostic questions – yes-no/true-false/multiple choice – could be designed such that students' responses would trigger feedback providing them with or directing them to preliminary readings which may or may not be in the subject reading list. A further refinement would be to ask your friendly educational designer to set up a feedback system for you to let you know within the first week or so of the semester how many times the test has been accessed, and what the modal responses have been to the questions you have asked. This could be useful in alerting you to particular areas of background knowledge that need to be reinforced before or as new material is introduced.
