Overall evaluationHow do Chinese students evaluate the experience? At the end of their interviews, the students were asked: "Overall, would you say you had made the right decision to come to Monash?" As you might expect, the responses were generally positive, though not without some qualifications. Here are some responses from students coming to the end of their first semester… Students at the end of their studies here were a bit more qualified in their responses… So do you think you made the right choice, deciding to come to Australia?
I don't know, you never know what will happen in the future. — Faith
So in general you are reasonably satisfied studying here?
In terms of studying theory, yes; but it would have been better if more practical experience could have been included. It would help us in finding work after graduation, like a good reference. But I don't know how they would build this in to the course. Also, some courses were pretty good, but one or two courses, after we'd finished them we felt they were hardly any use at all. — Lionel
Do you think you made the right choice in coming to Australia? – coming to Monash?
Mmm – coming to Australia – ah, yes. Sometimes I was wondering, because I – personally I like the Western culture, so sometimes I was thinking, what if I went to France or the UK; sometimes I was thinking, because I had already been to New Zealand, I should have gone to Europe for a more extreme different experience. But on the other hand, Australia is an English-speaking country, so that is convenient; and living cost is really cheaper than UK. Do you think what you have studied at Monash is going to be useful to you?
Yes, definitely. Apart from the knowledge (and the knowledge is definitely going to be useful for my future career), the way of learning – because when we go to work again we have to learn new knowledge again, but whether you can do things successfully depends on how quickly you can learn. And I think that I have got some skills about how to learn new knowledge in a new environment in a new discipline, and those experience will be quite helpful. — Keith

I suppose so. I don't think it's a matter of the right or wrong decision, more a matter of an opportunity to learn from experience.
I think so. In Australia there is a focus on regional business, whereas in Taiwan the focus is more on America. In Taiwan the business education is more the American style, whereas in Australia – different regions – they will focus on different regions. More global, I think.
Basically I feel quite satisfied. I think I've learnt a lot, in a number of respects. It's been quite tough, but satisfying, all the same.
Yes I do, because in life you have to learn to be adaptable. At home it's too comfortable; you don't need to be adaptable. But here you learn to be a bit independent.
Yes. No matter where I go, in the USA, in the UK, in Australia, I think it's an important experience to my life. You know, if I hadn't come here, maybe I would have the same attitude to things, just made preparation and just pass, not think very carefully about it. But when I come here, after this three months' experience, I found I must take a serious attitude to everything I do. I found that if you give a task, once if I decide to do it I must try my best to do all the things to keep it good.
Yes, I do. All the time.
