Fines and penalties

When you have overdue items you cannot borrow books, renew your loans, place a hold or request intercampus photocopies. Return your books to resume these activities.

Fines

A fine is charged if items are returned late. Items must be returned no later than 10 minutes before the library closes on the due date or placed in the out-of-hours returns chute at least one hour before the library opens.

Avoid fines by:

  • collecting a date-due slip when you borrow
  • signing up for an SMS reminder so that you don’t forget to renew your loans
  • checking your loans via the Library tab on my.monash or after signing in to Search
  • renewing your books or returning them before the due date.

The fine charged depends on the item:

  • Standard loan items attract a fine of 50 cents per item per day (or part of day).
  • Short loans ("high-demand” books or overnight loans): five dollars per item per day (or part of day).
  • Loans from the reserve collection: 10 cents per minute.
  • Group study room keys: 10 cents per minute.
  • Locker keys (three-hour loan): 50 cents per hour or part of hour.
  • Locker keys (one-day loan): five dollars per day or part of day.
  • Lost or damaged items: $150 per item. Exceptions to the standard fee may apply in the case of unusually expensive items.
  • Lost keys: $30 for locker keys, $150 for replacement of carrel door locks and keys

Fines accrue for overdue items for all library users, but do not have to be paid until a certain figure is reached, as follows:

Students: you don't need to pay anything until your total fines are $25 or more.  However, when the fine reaches $25 you must pay the entire amount.
Staff: you don't need to pay anything until your total fines are $50 or more.  However, when the fine reaches $50 you must pay the entire amount.

If you have to pay a fine, you will not be able to borrow books, renew your loans, place a hold or request intercampus photocopies until it is paid.

Library fines remaining unpaid after several months become a student encumbrance. Until the debt is paid you will not be able to use your IT accounts (Authcate, Novell etc), re-enrol, get your results or graduate.
