About borrowing

How many books can I borrow?

  • Undergraduate students - 30 items, for 2 weeks
  • Postgraduate students and honours - 60 items, for 4 weeks
  • Staff and HDR students - unlimited items, for 6 weeks
  • MUELC students - 15 items, for 2 weeks

Up to 6 renewals may be available. High demand or special items may be restricted.

Borrowing entitlements 

Monash staff and students

  • Undergraduates (including Monash College and Open Universities Australia (Monash) undergraduates): 30 items for 2 weeks. For Monash Off-campus students, who are eligible for postal loans, the initial loan period is increased to 4 weeks to include postal delivery time each way. 
  • Postgraduates by coursework and Honours (including Open Universities Australia (Monash) postgraduates): 60 items for 4 weeks.
  • Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students and staff: unlimited loans for 6 weeks. Items borrowed through the Document Delivery will have a loan period of 4 weeks. 

Monash English Language Centre (MUELC) students

  • You can borrow in person from any of the eight campus libraries. You must register at the information point first.
  • You can borrow 15 items for 2 weeks and renew them up to 6 times.
  • You can renew (re-borrow) many items or request items that are on loan to someone else (see placing a 'Hold' below).
  • You cannot borrow high-demand items or journals
  • You are not eligible to request postal loans

Borrowing high-demand or non-standard items

  • High demand items may have a loan period of 14 days or less.
  • Some materials have more restrictive loan conditions.

Requesting a hold or postal loan

  • You may place a hold request for an item which is on loan, or on the shelf at a different campus, in Search.
  • You may not place a hold request on Special materials.
  • If you are eligible for off-campus services, you may request a postal loan by placing a hold on the desired item in Search, using Off-campus service as the pick-up location.

Renewing your loans

  • You can renew most items up to 6 times.
  • You cannot renew Special materials or those items which have been requested by someone else. 
  • Renew your items via the Library tab on my.monash or by signing in to Search and then selecting 'My Loans'. You may also renew loans in person at any library branch or by phoning 03 9905 5054.

Overdue items

If you have an item that is overdue, you won't be able to borrow or renew loans. Fines will apply.

Returning items

  • Items can be returned to any branch except for overnight and reserve loans, which must be returned to the branch where you borrowed them.
  • Return chutes are accessible 24 hours at all campuses.

Arrangements for placements or teaching rounds

Students on medical or nursing placement or teaching rounds may be permitted to borrow for longer. Ask Library staff for details.

Affiliated libraries

Researchers based in hospitals can request that items to be sent to their affiliated teaching hospital library.
