Study spaces

Users with a disability

The Library provides a choice of study spaces to suit different work preferences including silent study areas with desks where you can plug in your laptop, individual study carrels, computer workstations, or discussion areas with tables for group work. Some collaborative areas have additional equipment such as media:scape tables, glass writing panels and whiteboards.

To assist students with their belongings, lockers are provided at some branches. In all libraries, you should ensure that your valuables are not left unattended.

At the different libraries rooms may be offered for use by individual students and/or groups.

Group study rooms

Most library branches have rooms that can be used for group discussions or quiet study purposes.  Use of these rooms can be booked in advance, except at the Hargrave-Andrew Library where booking is not needed.  Enquire at the information point at your branch to make a booking, which may be limited at times of heavy demand.  Bookings are open to all Monash staff or students.

At the Matheson Library larger discussion rooms containing audiovisual equipment can be booked by a group of three of more students only. At Matheson and the Law Library a group study room which is vacant after 15 minutes can be rebooked.

Postgraduate facilities

A study room on level one of the Matheson Library is accessible to postgraduate students who register for swipe card access (select Matheson Library, Postgraduate study room). Computer workstations, printing facilities and lockers are provided. The lockers can be booked for one semester at the information point.

In addition to this postgraduate study room, 32 individual study rooms each accommodating one person are located within the Matheson Library. These study rooms can be booked for a semester by presenting your ID card at the information point.

At Caulfield Library, individual study rooms equipped with computer workstations are located on level four and can be booked by postgraduate students for a maximum period of four hours per day. Bookings can be made through the information point at Caulfield up to one week in advance.

At Peninsula Library a postgraduate room is accessible to postgraduate students who register for a pin code at the information point. Computer workstations, lockers and a kitchenette are provided.

Group study space Gippsland

The upper floor of the Gippsland Library has been redeveloped to provide a modern flexible learning space. The space has zones for collaboration and laptop use and café style booths with plasma monitors for group work with or without laptops.

Quiet study areas

The libraries include quiet study areas, where students are asked to respect the rights of others by working quietly and leaving mobile phones turned off. At the Law Library all levels above level one are individual quiet study areas, including the stairwell.
