About this resource
The Ellis and Messina database consists of the taxonomic titles in the Foraminifera, Ostracoda, and Diatom catalogues. They are the international authority on taxonomy in Foraminifera (since 1942), Ostracoda (since 1954) and Diatoms (since 1982). The Catalogues now approach 82,000 original illustrated type descriptions, with more than 1,000 added annually. The Catalogues are now delivered over the Internet. The Catalogues reproduce the complete type descriptions for genus- and species-level taxa, including full-size reproduction of original figures and charts. Diagnoses in western European languages are given verbatim, while those in Russian, Chinese, and other non-western languages are translated by professional micropaleontologists. The stratigraphic level, locality and depository of the type material are given for each species-level taxon, and bibliographic and taxonomic terms are expanded and verified against the Ellis and Messina database. Some 300 new taxa are added yearly to each catalogue. Today, the Catalogues have more than 45,000 Foraminifera, 28,000 Ostracoda, and 8,000 Diatom genera and species.--Ellis and Messina Catalogues page.
