Asian Studies Research Collection

The Asian Studies Research collection (ASRC) is a leading research facilities for Asian studies in Australia.

The ASRC provides study and computer facilities for researchers and is supported by a team of specialist Asian studies librarians.

Collection overview

The collection consists of Asian language materials with collection strengths in

• Indonesia and Southeast Asia
• Korea
• Japan
• China

It includes large multimedia holdings. The Asian language collection is complemented by extensive English-language resources relating to Asia, including substantial holdings on South Asia. There are also rich research resources in Dutch and French for the study of colonial Indonesia and Indochina.

The ASRC houses rare and archival materials, including the Norodom Sihanouk Archival Collection, the Suetsugu Collection, the Australia Tibet Council Collection, the David Chandler Cambodia Collection, the Balai Pustaka Collection, the Southeast Asia Pamphlets Collection and the Indonesian Historical Collection. The Collection grows through selection of resources by the Asian studies librarians, requests from academics and researchers involved in Asian studies at Monash and donations, in line with the library's collection development policy.

The Asian Studies Research Collection manages the Melbourne Centre for Japanese Language Education Collection (MCJLE) and is a member of Asian Libraries in Melbourne (ALIM).

Borrowing

Use Search to discover materials in the collection. Most items are available for loan to Monash University staff and students, CAVAL and ULA borrowers and fee-paying members under standard loans conditions. Some special collections of rare or fragile material are on closed access and can only be consulted or photocopied in the library. Staff and students from other institutions can borrow most material held in the collection by requesting the required item from the Document Delivery/Inter Library Loans section of your institution's library. Staff and students from the University of Melbourne may also access the collection under the auspices of the Asian Libraries in Melbourne (ALIM).
