"One of the things that attracted me back to Monash was its commitment to sustainability"

Tell us about your role at Monash?

I work across the university to maximise career outcomes for our students and graduates. Employment and Career Development works with staff, students and employers to support the development of career management capacity in our students.

What do you like best about your role?

Supporting collegiality – we all achieve so much if we work together -and the opportunity to make a difference. It might seem a bit clichéd, but career development is about empowering people to take charge of their life!

How long have you been at Monash?

Around three years this time.

What role, and where, did you have prior to this one?

I have worked at a number of universities. My previous role was at Victoria University, where career development has an equity focus, and an emphasis on work integrated learning.

Why did you choose Monash to work?

Every university is different. I was keen to apply my experience to a Group of Eight setting – and try to give something back to my alma mater.

How did you choose your current career path?

When I was a student at Monash I remember meeting up with the head of the careers service. He asked me what job I would really like, and I said “your job”. It was a tortuous route, but here I am!

What do you like most about working:
at Monash?

There are lots of smart people at Monash. Sometimes I get to link them up, and we see some terrific synergies through creating the right connections.

in your faculty/department?

The genuine passion and commitment Employment and Career Development has for balancing stakeholder needs to achieve the best possible outcomes for our students.

How has Monash supported your career development?

My first degree was a Monash BSc (Hons). I use the analytical skills from that every day.

What facilities/resources does Monash have that sets it apart from other employers?

One of the things that attracted me back to Monash was its commitment to sustainability. Universities really have to “walk the talk” in creating environmental awareness , and we are doing that.

I have also discovered TeamMonash, which has created a great opportunity for me to further develop my cycling and networking!
