Dr George Athanasopoulos

"My department is the only department of econometrics and business statistics in Australia. We have a tremendous reputation around the world. It makes huge difference when you are trying to connect internationally and build your research profile overseas and you come from Monash. "
What's your role here at Monash Uni?
I’m a senior lecturer in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics at the Faculty of Business and Economics. My position is partly funded by an ARC postdoctoral fellowship and is 75% based on research and 25% on teaching. I share my time between teaching at Caulfield and conducting research at Clayton.
How long have you been working at Monash Uni?
I’m a Monash product. I have completed all of my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Monash. I have been working as a full-time employee since 2007 when I started as a research fellow in a postdoctoral position. In 2009 I was appointed to my current position.
Why did you come to Monash to work?
I have not looked to move outside Monash. We have a fantastic department of econometrics and business statistics, probably the most internationally renowned in Australia. The only move that I would make outside Monash would be outside Australia, so there’s no point in me looking elsewhere.
How did you get into your field of expertise?
I have two fields of expertise. One originated from my postdoctoral position which is tourism demand modeling and forecasting and my other field of expertise is multivariate time series analysis and in particular VARMA models, which is generated from my PhD and post PhD.
Tourism demand modeling and forecasting was a requirement of the postdoctoral position, but my PhD topic came about after a visit from a Nobel Prize winner, the late Clive Granger. He said that nobody was working in that area, and encouraged by my mentor I took it on. That’s how I became an expert in that field.
How has Monash supported your teaching / research work?
Monash supports me in terms of applying for external funding, it also provides me with a lot of funding as an organisation.
My faculty supports me to seek external funding by providing grants for developing ARC applications and also technical support in writing the actual applications. At a University level I have been admitted to the Monash Researcher Accelerator Program, which equals $110,000 over two years to accelerate your research career.
Monash also rewards you for your continuing efforts to achieve research results, for example in 2009 I was awarded the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research by an Early Career Researcher.
Monash also provides support to travel and network. I attend an international and a domestic conference per year fully funded by my department. There is also support to bring internationally renowned researchers to the department. I have seen some of the biggest experts in my field sitting down the hall, which is tremendous.
Are there any benefits you think Monash offers that sets us apart from other employers?
My department is the only department of econometrics and business statistics in Australia. We have a tremendous reputation around the world. It makes huge difference when you are trying to connect internationally and build your research profile overseas and you come from Monash.
Tell us one thing that people wouldn't normally know about you.
At the end of 2003 I would have weighed about 127kgs and I now weigh around 74kgs. I think I have become a bit of a fitness fanatic through various sporting activities such as cycling and I will be doing the Around the Bay, the 210km route, for the first time this year.
