How do I apply?
The first step in your application is to review the details of the position as advertised and observe any requirements stated. Carefully read the position description and other information provided about the vacancy.
Check whether you are eligible to apply and commence your application online at the “Jobs at Monash” website.
The application process is easy to follow on line and you can save your application at any stage and return to complete, and submit it as convenient.
Your application should include:
- your curriculum vitae, and
- an outline of how you meet the key selection criteria
- other documentation in support of your application (if applicable)
Your application may also include a covering letter.
What time do applications close on the advertised closing date?
Applications close at 11:55pm on the closing date stated in the advertisement. After this time you will not be able to submit an application online.
Late applications will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances. The contact person provided in the job advertisement will be able to advise if you are able to submit a late application.
How do I address the key selection criteria?
The key selection criteria are the skills, attributes, knowledge and qualifications required for the job. They are located in the position description. Addressing the key selection criteria is an opportunity for you to show the selection committee how you meet the requirements of the position
Write a short statement against each criteria outlining how you meet the criteria. Provide real examples that demonstrate your skills and abilities and illustrate the complexity and demands of the task you have used as an illustration.
It may be easier to do this if you use the STAR approach:
Describe the Situation
Identify the Task/problem that needed to be performed/solved
Explain the Action you took and what skills you used
Specify the Results.
Even if you have limited experience in relation to some criteria you may want to list related skills that may be of interest to the selection committee.
What if I don’t address the key selection criteria?
Monash University requires that all candidates address the key selection criteria specifically in their application.
If you do not address the selection criteria your application may not be considered by the selection committee.
Can I save my application and return later?
Yes, you can save your unfinished application at any stage and return later via the ‘Existing Applicant’ link on the Jobs at Monash homepage.
Please ensure that you update your records if there is any change to your contact details during the selection process. It is important that the University is able to contact you via email, telephone or at a postal address.
How do I know my application has been received?
If your application has been received you will receive an automatic acknowledgement email almost immediately.
If you do not receive a response please check that the email address you provided is correct. If you are still having difficulties, please call the contact person listed on the job advertisement.
Can I change or withdraw my application once it has been submitted?
Yes, you are able to change, update or withdraw your application at any time by through the ‘Existing Applicant’ link on the Jobs at Monash homepage.
What is the standard recruitment process?
Monash University uses a selection committee to assess and decide on applications to fixed term and continuing positions. Each committee consists of at least 3 Monash University representatives, all of whom contribute to the selection process.
Applicants who best meet the selection criteria will be called for further assessment, the first step of which is usually an interview. The interview questions will be developed from the position description and selection criteria to assist the selection panel make their assessment.
The selection committee may use a number of methods to assess your ability to do the job, including: interview questions, presentations, work samples, tests, reports from referees and records checks.
After interviews have been conducted, the selection committee will consider all applications, make their selection, and submit their selection recommendation for approval. After approval, the recommended successful applicant will be contacted and advised of the outcome of the interview.
This will be followed by a formal offer of employment which is valid for 10 working days. The offer of employment will generally be sent via e-mail and acceptance of the offer is to be completed on-line.
What does 'Monash Staff Only' mean?
Advertisements marked as ‘Monash Staff Only’ are open only to tenured Monash University staff and those staff who are currently on a fixed-term contract (appointed through a competitive process).
Under these arrangements, the following staff are not eligible to apply for these vacancies: temporary staff from a recruitment agency, staff currently on a fixed-term contract who have not been appointed through a competitive process, casual and Teaching Associate staff. These restrictions apply to professional roles advertised in both Faculty and non Faculty areas.
Is the information I provide to Monash kept private? How long does Monash keep my details?
Monash values the privacy of every individual's personal information and is committed to the protection of personal information.
The information collected by Monash in the course of your application and the selection process will be held in accordance with The Information Privacy Act 2000.
In most cases Monash will retain your details on record, however at all times you will have full access to view, edit, update or even remove your profile. By maintaining an up to date record on our database you can choose to be kept informed of vacancies that are relevant to your preferences and skills. Additionally key pieces of information can be automatically pre-populated into any future applications, saving you valuable time.

When will I hear something?
Once your application is received you will receive an acknowledgement email almost immediately.
The duration of the selection process does vary greatly. Should you have any queries regarding the timing of a particular recruitment activity, the contact person provided in the job advertisement will be able to advise you.
What if I don’t have the right to work in Australia?
The University accepts applications from overseas applicants. However, we are required to ensure that applicants are entitled to undertake employment in Australia by the time they commence employment with the University in accordance with the guidelines established by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).
Offers of employment to overseas applicants are subject to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship granting approval for permanent residency or an appropriate temporary work visa to cover the period of employment.

Applicants are required to notify the University of any Immigration Restriction that may preclude them from fulfilling the terms of any contract of employment offered by the University.
The contact person provided in the job advertisement will be able to advise whether an employer sponsored visa is available for this position.
What if I’m currently living interstate or overseas?
If you are successful for interview, a member of the selection committee will provide advice as to the options available to attend - whether in person or remotely.
Monash University may provide travel and relocation assistance to new staff relocating from either interstate or overseas in order to take up a position with the University. The contact person stated in the job advertisement will be able to provide advice as to whether this assistance is available for this position.
Police checks
It is the policy of Monash University that appropriate safety screening processes are adopted in the recruitment, selection, employment and promotion of staff.
Monash University has therefore implemented a police records check policy and procedures to ensure that appropriate staff are appointed or promoted to 'specified positions'.
If a Police Check is required for a specified position, this will be stated on the advertisement and may form part of your employment terms and conditions.
Working with Children Check
For some positions a Working with Children check will also be undertaken of applicants. This is a formal process of checks to help determine your suitability to work with children or have unsupervised access to children in your work. The check takes into account relevant criminal records, relevant apprehended violence orders and relevant completed disciplinary proceedings.

If a Working with Children Check is required for a specified position, this will be stated on the advertisement and will form part of your employment terms and conditions.
Referees
You will be asked to provide at least 3 referees in support of your application.
Referees should be people who can speak about your skills and knowledge (from paid or voluntary work or activity). It is best to confirm their willingness to act as referees before nominating them.
The selection panel will contact your referees if you are being considered for interview or appointment. The selection panel will ask your referees to comment on your work behaviour and performance and may ask referees to verify or comment on claims made by you.
