Attendance records do not have to be maintained for higher education courses
Except for students studying for a higher education qualification, providers are required to keep attendance records (NC 35)
Where attendance records are required to be kept:
An accurate record of academic performance and attendance must be kept for each student (NC 34, NC 35)
Providers must record students' attendance (including non-attendance) systematically (NC 39.1)
Attendance records must be monitored every fortnight for non-attendance (NC 39.2)
Procedures are established for contacting and counselling students who are absent for more than five consecutive days without approval, or who are not consistently attending their course (NC 39.3)
Procedures are in place for advising DIMIA via PRISMS of failure to meet visa conditions relating to attendance or academic performance (NC 39.5)
B. Guidelines
1. MU Guidelines
Faculties are not obliged to keep attendance records. As Monash University does not record attendance there is no reporting of students for non-attendance.
However, if faculties are aware of any students who may not be attending and if these students are not meeting course progression rules, these students should be considered for exclusion under the APC rules
2. MI Pty Ltd Guidelines
Both Monash College and the Monash University English Language Centre (MUELC) are obliged to keep attendance records. These records must be maintained in such a way that these can be vouched for accuracy. These records are used as the basis for following up students encountering attendance problems and for reporting of students who are not able to meet the 80% threshold for the study period.
