Academic progress and provision of supportive academic environment
A. Policy
Provide a supportive environment and relevant academic programs (AVCC 8.1, 8.2)
Monitor student academic progress and develop strategies to identify and assist students 'at risk' of breaching visa conditions regarding progress (NC 40, 46.2, AVCC 8.3)
B. Guidelines
All students face the challenge of adapting to a new study environment when they begin at Monash University. International students, as newly commencing students studying in a foreign environment can encounter a range of social, emotional, psychological, educational, financial and environmental issues.
Students may experience difficulty in:
Coping with the unfamiliar educational system in Australia and at Monash University
Coping with Australian and Western-centred content and values in their courses, if these are unfamiliar
Understanding the expectations regarding learning, assessment, and self management of their courses
Feeling comfortable and competent in the new culture
Developing appropriate communication skills in English (as much socially as academically)
Managing their time
Managing their finances
Developing maturity and self-reliance
Meeting family expectations
Developing social networks in Melbourne
Combating feelings of loneliness, isolation and rejection
Dealing appropriately with hitherto unavailable experiences
Dealing with the impact of global events on their lives
Given the challenges faced by new international students when they enrol, the importance of providing a supportive environment with procedures in place for monitoring student progress and managing 'at risk' students cannot be underestimated.
