Global Engagement - Office of the President and Vice-Chancellor:

  • conducts focused research and environmental scanning on international education for the benefit of the university community
  • develops project proposals and business plans for new initiatives
  • monitors funding opportunities from major international research funding bodies and manages the University’s relationship with those bodies
  • maintains the international partnerships database and supports the establishment of new partnerships
  • receives delegations from partners and potential partners
  • publishes and presents on key issues in international education and research
  • researches and prepares responses to requests from DEEWR, Universities Australia etc. on the university’s position on particular issues

Joe De Pasquale

Joe's primary role is to lead the engagement of scholarship and government agencies within Global Engagement at Monash University. Joe was previously the Manager of Higher Degrees Research Recruitment and Admission in the Marketing and International Unit of the Faculty of Arts at Monash. He was responsible for overseeing the Higher Degrees admission process across the faculty and case managing international scholarship applications. He has been seconded to the role of Manager International Development, Strategy and Planning at various times in the Faculty of Arts.

Prior to joining the Faculty of Arts at Monash, Joe was employed at the University of Melbourne in the Faculty of Education as the Industry and Community Liaison Officer. He coordinated the planning of major tenders and worked with academic staff to prepare contract tenders for clients such as the Department of Education and Training in Victoria and the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. He has a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) from Monash University.

Rebecca's primary responsibility is to implement the University's China strategy. Her primary focus is to provide advice and support in the University's engagement with China, and to facilitate the successful implementation of research and education programs with the University's strategic Chinese partners. Rebecca joined Global Engagement in June 2011. Prior to this she worked at the Faculty of Engineering. Rebecca holds a Master of International Business, a Master of Diplomacy and Trade, and a Bachelor of Business Management from Monash University. Rebecca has lived in Beijing, China, and speaks fluent Chinese.

Joanna's primary role is to lead the development and impact of international institutional partnerships within Global Engagement at Monash University. Joanna was previously the Manager of International Engagement for the Faculty of Education, Monash University. She was responsible for business development including sourcing, tender preparation, developing and project managing research contracts and consultancies, consortium projects, and Educational Services activities across the faculty and multiple campuses. Joanna had a range of roles within the Faculty of Education including managing a team responsible for International student recruitment, international student support services, managing transnational education programs, and supporting the activities of the Associate Dean International.

Prior to joining Monash, Joanna was employed at the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). She worked in the Labour Information Network, providing industrial research services, in the OHS team, supporting national OHS campaigns, and in the ACTU Trust supporting the design and implementation of a range of membership and industrial campaigns.

She has a Bachelor of Arts (Latin American Studies) from La Trobe University and a Master of Education (International Education) from Monash University.

Nizar’s primary role is developing a country specific Monash strategy for educational involvement in the Middle East region, to promote and develop HDR scholarship opportunities from the Middle East, with focus on recruiting HDR students on scholarship from ME, developing policies and guidelines for proactive engagement with leading universities and educational institutions in the region and developing senior level linkages with key government bodies. Nizar joined Monash University in January 2006 joining Global Engagement in April 2007. Nizar was the Director of Primary Health Care, Sharjah Medical District Ministry of Health, Sharjah, UAE for thirty years from 1976. Nizar holds a M.B.B.S. from Ain Shams University, Egypt. A D.T.M&H. from University of Liverpool UK, a Dip.Ven. from the University of Liverpool UK and a Master of Family Medicine (Clinical) from Monash University. Nizar speaks fluent Arabic.

Michael's role is to manage and coordinate the preparation of bids, proposals and submissions and to assist faculties in the development of projects aligned with the University's goals relating to education services in an international context.

Prior to joining Global Engagement in July 2011, Michael was working as a Senior Project Manager at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He has project management experience in development, higher education, research and the health sector. He has worked for a number of international organisations, such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the European Agency for Reconstruction and the European Union's Commission for External Relations. In 2006, Michael migrated to Australia where he spent three years working on innovative patient safety initiatives in Brisbane.

Michael received his M.A. qualification in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Heidelberg in Germany and graduated in 2004 from the College of Europe in Belgium in European Political and Administrative Studies. He is a PMI certified Project Management Professional and speaks fluent German, French and Dutch.

Alison has worked in Global Engagement since the beginning of February 2008. As International Protocol Officer, Alison’s role is to coordinate the itineraries and oversee protocol of international delegations visiting the university. Visits fall within the categories of diplomatic visits, visits by representatives from international academic institutions and also senior officials from overseas government departments. Alison has worked in the international area of Monash University for the last ten years both within the university and at Monash College.

Alan began working in Global Engagement in September 2010. His primary role is to provide support to research and analysis in areas of international engagement, student recruitment and marketing and communications. Since commencing at Monash in 2002, he has worked at the Research Office as a data analyst, and at University Planning and Statistics as a Statistics Officer. Prior to working at Monash, Alan was a data analyst in the environmental and recycling industry having worked overseas in London at a large recycling company, and for a small private environmental consultancy in Melbourne. He has a Bachelor of Science from Monash University.

Allan's primary role is to provide research, protocol and executive support for Monash's international engagements, particularly in East Asia, Middle East and Latin America. He is also responsible for managing the process for establishing or renewing agreements with Monash's international partners within Global Engagement.

Allan joined Global Engagement in June, 2008. Prior to joining Monash University, Allan lived in Japan and Korea and has worked in a variety of fields including: lexicography, ESL instruction, corporate sustainability, and commercial banking. Allan holds a Bachelor of Business (International Business) from QUT, and a Master of Diplomacy and Trade from Monash University undertaken via distance education.

Ranmalee’s primary role is to assist in the facilitation of bids, proposals and submissions and provide project management support aligned with the University's goals relating to education services in an international context.

Ranmalee holds a Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons) from the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore and a Master of Management from the University of Leicester, UK. An early career spanning Singapore, London and Australia saw her transition from the auditing profession to the education sector. Most recently, she was Assistant Manager at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, a graduate school of the National University of Singapore where she looked after student recruitment, corporate communications and alumni relations.

As Director, Dr Eugene Sebastian is responsible for providing strategic leadership and support for global engagement initiatives and priorities.

 

Eugene was previously Director for International Research responsible for building strategic alliances with key international partners. He spent 10 years at the University of Sydney's Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific leading international development projects funded by United Nations agencies (UNDP and UNICEF in Indonesia, Cambodia and North Korea), the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, AusAID and the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor. At the University of Sydney he led a Sydney-based leadership development program - the Young Professionals Project - as an outreach initiative targeting young leaders from government, non-government and education sectors.  Focusing on the theme 'Generational Change in Asia', the program attracted more than 1,200 young professional in one year.  Eugene also worked with a multinational firm in Sydney and Auckland, developing corporate training solutions for companies in both the Australian and New Zealand markets.

 

Eugene holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Flinders University and a PhD from the University of Sydney. His journal article on Australia's education aid reform was selected for the 2007 issue of New Talents 21C published by the Australian Public Intellectual Network. His doctoral thesis won the 2010 International Education Association of Australia's award for ‘Outstanding postgraduate thesis (PhD) on a topic related to international education'.

Michael leads areas that include the development and review of the university's international plan, development, planning and coordination for the Monash University Prato Centre, coordination with key university partners in Europe and US, as well as development of Monash Abroad.

 

Michael has worked and lived in Italy and Korea. He holds a B.Comm from the University of Melbourne, a G.Dip (Arts - Asian Studies) from Monash and also studied at the Graduate School of International Studies and the Korean Language Institute at Yonsei University, Seoul, where he was a Korea Foundation Fellow. He is currently completing an MBA.

Erica's primary role is to provide support to the Director. Prior to joining Monash University in August 2009, Erica worked as Consultant and Program Coordinator in the International Development sector. She has a Bachelor of Arts (International Studies) from RMIT University and is currently completing a Master of Education. Erica has worked overseas in Afghanistan, coordinating an aid-funded scholarship program.

Rachel provides a range of executive-level administrative, secretarial and office management support to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement). Rachel plays a critical role in the efficient running of Global Engagement including diary management, work flow priorities, travel management, and HR requirements. Rachel has worked in the International area of Monash University for the last 17 years including Monash International. Rachel speaks fluent Spanish and moderate Italian.
