Presentation #1: Discourse-based on-line discussion using Webboard
by Mr Bernard Holkner, Faculty of Education, Clayton
Bernard Holkner will describe his use of discussion systems in
teaching. The approach used by Bernard is described as "discourse based",
in that the discussion system provides the vehicle for most of the
teaching of subjects to off-campus students, including presenting
materials and topics, student discussion and managed dialogue. The
"Webboard" software was selected for this purpose, and this presentation
will outline some of its features. Other technologies used to support the
teaching approach will be briefly mentioned.
Bernard is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, with teaching
and research interests in the areas of telecommunications in education,
multimedia, and virtual reality. He is Director of the Centre for
Educational Multimedia, which is a unit interested in the evaluation and
development of information technologies in educational and training
environments.
Presentation #2: On-line Discussion in a cross-campus course in
Asian Studies

Asian Languages & Cultures
In this paper Alison et al talk about the approach they have used in
INT2020
- Asian Studies. The subject is taught on the Berwick, Peninsula and
Malaysian
campuses. Basically students from the three campuses are assigned into
groups of three or four students (at least one from each campus). They
are assigned a topic which they work on on-line. They each submit an
individual summary of their project by email. The paper is an evaluation
of this project from the pedagogical, techncial and teaching workload
perpectives and makes practical recommendations for others who may want
to try a similar approach.
Presentation #3: Using the Monash Portal with the CeLTS
standard subject web templates
by Ms Robyn Benson, Educational Designer, CeLTS, Clayton, & Ms
Lesley Hewitt, Lecturer, Social Work and Human Services,
Caulfield.
Robyn and Lesley talk about using the Monash Portal in conjunction with
the CeLTS standard subject web template as a very easy start to
developing and offering an interactive web-based learning environment.
To develop the web-site, all that is required is selection of your site
structure, completion of a Word template, arrangement for provision of
other materials (for example, audio, images, documents for Acrobat
files), and selection of the site style from the options available. When
you register the job, CeLTS will arrange production and publication of
the site.
Learning tasks within the site can be linked to portal-based
discussion groups to allow seamless movement between the Portal subject
page and the site. This short presentation will demonstrate how this
