An Integrated IT Assisted University Teaching and Learning Environment (ITAULE)

by Assoc. Prof. Henry Wu, School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Monash University (Clayton)

Advances in information and telecommunication technologies have contributed to the globalization of the tertiary education market. They have greatly facilitated the leading universities both nationally and internationally to deliver their education services and products to a much wider audience most effectively and efficiently. Whilst the competition is real, we are offered plenty of opportunities for the pursuit of innovation, quality, efficiency, flexibility and effectiveness in course delivery and other university education programs.

The presentation will give an overview of existing information technology (IT) assisted teaching and learning facilities used by a number of universities, present a brief analysis of the technologies employed in the current arrangement, and highlight advances made in recent years in technological areas which are most relevant to tertiary education.

It will introduce an integrated IT Assisted University teaching and Learning Environment (ITAULE) as an example to explain what can be achieved using the latest IT. It will show how ITAULE will take advantage of the new Monash campus network infrastructure and provide broadcasting quality digital TV for delivering lectures across campuses and regions, on-demand audiovisual presentation, and multimedia course materials for on-campus students, distance and open learning. Benefits of ITAULE to the university teaching and learning will also be analysed.
