McIVER (Multicampus Interactive Video Education Resource).
McIver is a video-on-demand system developed by ANSPAG, for use by students in the main Monash libraries. The facility has been available to students since mid 1996, and is currently to be found in the Caulfield and Clayton campus libraries.
McIVER delivers MPEG encoded digital video to PCs in the libraries, using Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) to the desktop. The video is stored on a central video server, and students request and receive the digital video over the network.
The ANSPAG group designed and built the system, which won the prestigious "Best Communications Application" award at the Networld & Interop Exhibition in Sydney last November. McIVER is currently only available to Visual Arts students, since the Visual Arts Library was closely involved in the early development of McIVER. However, there is growing demand for such a service to be made available to the wider student community.
