Cristina Varsavsky is a lecturer in the Dept of Mathematics, Caulfield. She has been involved in research and the development of computer based learning material for several years.
Alistair Carr is a senior lecturer in the School of Applied Science, Gippsland and has for many years been teaching various subjects in applied mathematics there.
Epsilon is an interactive electronic book for first year mathematics developed by the presenters and funded by the Monash Development Fund and a Monash Multimedia Grant. Epsilon is being developed in TOOLBOOK II and will be stored in a CD ROM.
This presentation will be about the experience gained during the development of Epsilon: the identification of the most important features in constructing an electronic book in mathematics, the handling of equations and mathematics input, the interactive features, the programming, the graphics, the book structure, the principles behind the screen design, etc. The presentation will also outline the effective modus operandis developed to minimise production costs.
