Hypertext and Problem-Based Learning in
Engineering...
On May 12th, 1994, Mr Roger Hadgraft of the Department of Civil
Engineering presented to HEPCIT on the subject of Combining
Hypertext and Problem-Based Learning in Engineering Education. Roger
enunciated and developed upon his strong belief that valuable lecture time
should not be wasted in merely presenting subject content information to
students. This information, in the main, is available to students in
alternative formats, either in printed form, or as Windows Help files
which may be distributed on disk for use at home or available on-line in
student laboratories on campus. Roger sees lectures as precious
quality time slots that provide opportunities to engage students at a
higher level than that required for note taking.
To make the job of Help file creation as easy as possible he has
developed a software tool which translates hierarchically organised
files in Microsoft Word into Windows Help files. Through the
application of this tool it is a relatively simple matter to convert
quite large sets of course notes (often already available in word
processed format) into on-line modules of information which can be
accessed via the familiar `hot words' used in Windows Help files (and
familiar to users of the Windows Help facility in software such as
Word, Excel etc).
