Farrer Buildings 101

To the inexperienced eye, Monash Residential is a blase mix of dingy looking brown brick buildings. But look a little further and it is anything but! Farrer Hall is one of the five Halls of Residence that Monash Uni provides, and it's got a reputation that even Casanova would be envious of.

Unlike the other halls at Monash, Farrer is separated into two buildings; the 'House of Commons' and its 'House of Lords', a.k.a. Commons and Lords. They are located adjacent to each other and both are accessible to Farrer residents, no matter which one you stay in. While there are no difference to the facilities offered in each building, ressies have formed their own preferences to which one is really the place to be.

Farrer Facilities

As a resident of Farrer Hall you will have access to facilities that will meet most of your day to day needs.

Residents' Room

Farrer Commons & Lords

Room

Farrer rooms include a bed, desk and chair, armchair, cupboards, shelving, bin and a connection for internet and phone lines. Bedding linen is provided and can be exchanged every Wednesday night for fresh sheets.
Disclaimer: TV, fridge, computer, shining disco ball and posters depicting rebellious rock bands not provided. Rooms are also bigger in real life. No, really. They are.

Yea Olde Farrer Shoppe

Farrer Commons - Ground Floor

The Shop

The shop provides a service for all residents. It provides some of the most commonly needed grocery items at reasonable prices, generally cheaper than those at local milk bars. All profits from the shop are used to maintain and improve Farrer facilities, and to contribute to the Farrer social functions. So, buying what you need at the shop, not only costs less than elsewhere, it guarantees that the modest profits stay inside the hall.
Opening times are normally 9.30-10.30pm, from Sunday to Thursday.

Common Room

Farrer Commons - Ground Floor

The Common Room

The Common Room, located next door to the William Farrer Shop, contains the Hall's audio system. It also contains a projector and a large screen for viewing of DVDs videos and television (Not just any television ... Foxtel!). Movie nights are regularly held on Sunday nights after what we call 'Snack n Chat'. The Common Room is always open to any Farrer resident using their keys.

Pool Room

Farrer Commons - Ground Floor

Pool

Adjoining the Common Room is a pool room with great stereo facilities. This is a favourite location for a quick game and chat before classes start, or for organised pool competitions. A room that is always in use! Definate highlight of Farrer life.

Table Tennis Room

Farrer Lords - Ground Floor

Table Tennis Room

A prized acquisition, the table tennis room is taking some recreational weight off the ever so loved pool room. Its a great place to match up against Farrer's best, and have an awesome time at that.

Computer Lab

Farrer Lords - Ground Floor

Computer Room

There are five machines, housed in the Farrer ground-floor Lord building. A laser printer is also available. Each of these computers is connected to the University network (Novell) so that user drives can be accessed. Any faculty program can also be downloaded. There is also a large black and white printer for residents' use. In addition to the Computer Centre, all rooms in Farrer Hall have a network connection. This effectively links every computer at Halls of Residences so that students can effectively share files, whilst also providing all students with internet access. They are equipped with a private internet connection point (100Mbps LAN, aka really frikkin' fast). These connection points give residents 24-hour access to the Hall's network, University campus network and World Wide Web.

Kitchens

Each Farrer floor

Squeaky clean kitchen

The floor kitchens have just recently been updated and are equipped with new ovens, stovetops, microwave ovens, toasters, kettles and communal refrigerators. Residents are free to use them at any reasonable time for cooking a meal, heating or eating a snack, playing cards, reading, discussions, or simply to escape from their own room.

Laundries

Each Farrer floor next to the kitchen

Laundy Room

These are located on each floor of both blocks and are free of charge. They contain washing-machines, tumble-dryers, basins, and irons and ironing boards. To minimise the disturbances to residents in adjoining rooms, washing-machines and tumble dryers may only be used between 10am and 10pm daily (between 10am and 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays).

'The' Library

Tucked into a corner on ground floor commons

THE Library

A well used room that Farrer-sites lovingly call 'The Library' it's Farrer's all purpose room. Brimming with people on a Thursday night for pre-nott drinks, it is sometimes a party room also used for some Floor Functions. Sometimes its a study room for those burning the midnight oil. And, on other occasions is a haven for disgruntled residents who have been disenchanted by whats on in the common room.
When you arrive, just ask any one of the Farrer veterans just how many books are in this enlightening room.

Music Room

Farrer Lords - Ground Floor

Piano in music rm

The Music room is where Farrer's musically talented (and challenged) gather to ply their trade. Many wonderful melodies can be heard drifting out of this room. It can be used by player's of any instrument except the horrible sounding double bass!
