Pool Comp 2007
Winner: Sammy Worrall
Runner-up: Dave Sinclair
2007 saw the introduction of the Farrer Pool Competition and its success ensured it will become an annual event in years to come. 35 players entered the tournament which guaranteed that some great matches would be witnessed over a period of several weeks.
The young up-and-coming Sandy McCann was brilliant in his first up match where he sent tournament director Matt Bell packing his bags and on his way back up to 3rd Lords with his new birthday pool cue tailing between his legs. Elke Hanson was the only one of the 3 girls in the draw to make it through to the second round, whilst other first-round encounters saw Shashi Amarnani get through a tight game against his 1st Lords pal Pav Zielinski, Joe “pool Sharkness” Cleary move past the fancied JB Frame and the dark-horse, Rohit Anand, easily progress.
The intensity sky-rocketed in the second round with Sandy and Rohit contesting the most heated and controversial match onlookers had ever seen. Witnesses said they feared for their own safety as things turned ugly preventing that day’s completion of the match. Rohit won the match the next day following their release on bail. Also progressing to the 3rd Round was Sammy J, Carl, Chinmay, Tarun, President Sinclair, Ravi and Chirag.
Spectators flocked to see the quarter and semi finals of the tournament after they heard news of the events of the previous round. The standard of competition on display jumped up a notch and the experience of two most recent FHS Presidents was telling as they rose to the top and advanced to the final.
The Worrall v Sinclair finale was touted as being the biggest duel of the year since the Mundine v Green bout and it did not disappoint. The match was locked at one win apiece when Sinky looked to have the upper hand in the third, before Sammy J decided to stun the crowd with a ridiculous eight ball potting streak to claim victory (no joke), capping off a fantastic tournament.
Thanks to all those who participated in the first Annual Farrer Pool Competition.
