Farrer Camp 2008

After 12 weeks of gruelling uni assignment work and few too many Farrer BBQ snags, a small group of Farrer’s finest made the trek down the Great Ocean Rd to Cumberland River for the weekend, embarking on this year’s Farrer Camp.

Everyone left Farrer in their car pools and trundled down the Princes Fwy at leisurely pace (Darweesh’s SS Commodore excluded) on the Friday afternoon. Some stopped in G-town to stock up on supplies, but most found it quite depressing and moved through the grief-stricken town, greatly contrasting the scenes of euphoria witnessed the same time last year. One way or another everyone eventually made it to our destination. Editor’s note: The use of the word ‘eventually’ mustn’t be played down here, with several female-navigated vehicles managing to lose the Great Ocean Rd!! That’s right, that long windy one along the coast - although the girls maintain they were simply performing a practice they refer to as ‘Lorne-laps’.

Once everyone had set up camp, directly adjacent to the lovely Cumberland River, it wasn’t long before everyone was huddled around the campfire enjoying a yarn and a cold beverage or two. Most ferrets, in true Farrer style, had naturally arrived at camp yielding only the absolute essentials for the first night - those of course which they had obtained at the Lorne bottle shop a few hours prior. A few, not content on satisfying their hunger with beer, proudly produced sausages from their esky’s and proceeded to the BBQ with a hint of pride about their good-in-comparison first night’s dinner preparation. Any sense of pride however was soon quashed, when the 3rd Commons girls produced out of nowhere their 3-course gourmet do-it-yourself camping super dinner! Even the local wildlife appeared to try and score a nibble with everyone else drooling and looking on.

To be continued.. (post exam period!)
